hard times for soft power last night, the award-winning author and screenwriter miha mazzini was in seattle to promote the first english editions of two of his older works, the cartier project and king of the rattling spirits (based on his film screenplay, “sweet dreams”), due out from scala house press. mazzini hails from slovenia, the former yugoslav republic nestled between italy and croatia at the north end of the adriatic sea, and has been the lion of the literary scene there since the 1980s. his appearance in seattle is part of a weekend-long festival sponsored by scala house celebrating the new slovene avant gard, and includes films, music, readings, and the launch of the first-ever english Translation of the classic slovenian historical novel alamut, by vladimir bartol (...
